The European Conference on Cognitive Ergonomics

15 – 18 September 2026 Siena, Italy

The European Conference on Cognitive Ergonomics (ECCE) is the flagship annual event of the European Association of Cognitive Ergonomics (EACE).

It brings together researchers and practitioners to share insights and advancements in cognitive ergonomics and human–technology interaction.
Hosted by the University of Siena, ECCE 2026 will take place in the historic Tuscan city whose humanistic heritage provides an ideal setting for this edition’s theme.

Call for participation

In recent decades, technology has evolved from being a mere tool to becoming a pervasive presence that shapes human behavior, relationships, and values. This growing interdependence calls for a new sustainable and peaceful alliance between humanity and technology — one that prioritizes ethical design, inclusivity, and ecological responsibility. Rather than perceiving technology as a threat or a neutral instrument, societies must cultivate a conscious partnership where innovation serves human and planetary well-being.

In the new humanity-technology ecosystems Artificial Intelligence, robotics, and complex systems should be guided by principles of transparency, empathy, and social justice. Education, production systems aimed at innovation, and policy must work hand in hand to ensure that technological progress strengthens, rather than erodes, human dignity.

By redefining our relationship with technology as cooperative and purpose-driven we can move toward a future where progress and peace coexist in balance.

Call For Papers

ECCE 2026 welcomes original contributions that advance the field of cognitive ergonomics, whether through theoretical innovation, methodological development, or practical application.

The conference invites high-quality long papers, short papers, and work-in-progress submissions that present original research and practical insights. Contributions should meaningfully enhance understanding and practice in cognitive ergonomics and human–media interaction, interpreted in its broadest sense.

Research papers will appear in the Proceedings of ECCE 2026, which will be published in the ACM Digital Library. Eventual multimedia materials will be published as source material in the ACM Digital Library. A list of proceedings can be found at this link.

Submission Details

ECCE 2026 welcomes submissions presenting original contributions in the field of Cognitive Ergonomics. All submissions will undergo a double-blind peer-review process.

Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings and presented at the conference.

ECCE 2026 welcomes three types of submissions:

Submission Type
Length
Description

Long Papers

7–15 pages (including references)

Mature and well-developed research contributions, including completed empirical studies, design research, or substantial theoretical work.

Short Papers

Up to 6 pages (including references)

Focused contributions presenting complete but more concise research results, design explorations, or theoretical insights.

Work-in-Progress Papers

Up to 6 pages (including references)

Early-stage research contributions. These may describe preliminary studies, early prototypes, conceptual ideas, or ongoing research projects.

Work-in-progress papers provide an opportunity to share promising ideas and receive feedback from the community before the research is fully completed.

All papers must be submitted through EasyChair.

After logging in as an author, you will be able to select the appropriate submission category (Long Paper, Short Paper, or Work-in-Progress Paper).

All submissions must follow the ACM single-column format using the official ACM publication templates.

Templates and formatting guidelines are available here:

Please ensure that your submission is fully anonymized:

  • Remove author names, affiliations, and identifying information from the manuscript.
  • Ensure that metadata (such as document properties) do not contain author information.
  • References to your own previous work should remain in the bibliography, but should be written in the third person (e.g., “As described in [10]…” instead of “In our previous work [10]…”).

All submissions will be reviewed through a double-blind peer-review process by members of the program committee and external reviewers. Papers will be evaluated based on their originality, relevance, methodological quality, and contribution to the field of cognitive ergonomics.

Accepted papers will be included in the ECCE 2026 Proceedings and published in the ACM Digital Library.

A selection of outstanding Long Papers will be invited to submit an extended version for a special issue of the journal Behaviour & Information Technology (BIT).

Supplementary materials (e.g., videos, datasets, or other multimedia files) may be included as additional files in the ACM Digital Library.

All accepted papers must be presented during the conference.
Standard audiovisual equipment, including a projector and audio system, will be available for presentations.

At least one author of each accepted paper must register for ECCE 2026 and present the work at the conference.
